At least 1 injured in fire at Marian University building

Cause of fire under investigation

INDIANAPOLIS - Crews were on the scene of a fire on the Marian University campus Monday evening, officials said.

The fire started in Fisher Hall in the 3200 block of Cold Spring Road just before 8 p.m., officials with the Indianapolis Fire Department said.

A spokesman for Marian University confirmed the fire was in a small academic building on campus. IFD said 16 students and one alumnus were practicing for an upcoming play when several students smelled smoke.

Authorities said 14 people left immediately while three others attempted to find the source of the smoke.

Officials said the 26-year-old alumnus, identified as Andrew Cope, suffered slight smoke inhalation when he encountered smoke on the second floor of the building.

Crews said the fire was under control within 25 minutes, and authorities believe most of the damage was limited to the roof and attic. Damage was estimated to be around $250,000, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Officials said classes on campus will resume as normal Tuesday, except for classes in Fisher Hall.
