Crews respond to fire at south-Indy shopping center

INDIANAPOLIS - A reported fire at a south-side-Indy shopping center Friday morning drew emergency crews to the area.

The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) said just after 8 a.m., a report of a fire came in from Southern Plaza, located near U.S. Highway 31 and Interstate 465 at 4200 S. East St.

IFD spokeswoman Rita Reith said the fire started toward the back of the Sally Beauty Supply store and might have been smoldering overnight, but the specific cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

The BMO Harris Bank next door suffered smoke damage, and crews had to cut a hole in the building's roof.

As of 8:30 a.m. the fire was marked as under control.

Three businesses -- Sally Beauty, BMO Harris, and PJ's Beauty College -- planned to stay closed Friday following the fire.
