Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department dispatchers said emergency crews responded to a fatality on the city's south side between 10:30 and 11 a.m. Saturday.
Police said they arrived on scene near the intersection of East Stop 11 Road and Madison Avenue to find an unresponsive man lying in the street suffering from apparent trauma.
EMS personnel arrived and pronounced the victim deceased.
Police identified the driver of a Dodge SUV which reportedly struck the man as Zachary Wethington, 23, of Indianapolis.
Wethington was heading north on Madison Avenue when, he told police, the victim crossed the street in front of him. He said he attempted to brake, but was unable to stop in time.
Police said Wethington is cooperating with the investigation, and that they do not suspect alcohol was involved at this time.
There is no word on the identity of the victim yet.
