JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. -- A 14-year-old boy was arrested early Monday morning after leading the Johnson County Sheriff's Office on a chase in his grandfather's truck, police say.

A deputy with the sheriff's office noticed a red Ford F150 headed westbound on Smith Valley Road, away from State Road 135. The truck had headlights on, but no tail lights.

The deputy attempted to make a stop, but the truck took off instead, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The 14-year-old drove on the following route, with the deputy behind him, according to the document:

  • South into Chelsea Terrace
  • West onto Queensgate Drive
  • Over CR 400 W.
  • Around Sugar Grove Elementary
  • North over Smith Valley Road, where he went off the road and struck a cable box, before going back south
  • West on Smith Valley Road
  • North on SR 37
  • East on Fairview
  • South on Morgantown
  • East on Smith Valley Road
  • South into Pinebrook Apartments

When he drove into the complex, the 14-year-old was arrested without incident. The deputy found two teenage girls, age 14 and 15. One of the girls said she tried to get him to stop, but he wouldn't. The two girls were released to their guardians.

The grandfather of the boy said he never gave him permission to drive the vehicle. He also said he noticed a second set of keys to the truck that had been missing before the incident.

The 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, reckless driving, operating while never receiving.
