INDIANAPOLIS – The man accused of vandalizing the Confederate monument at Garfield Park Saturday caused over $30,000 in damage.
According to a probable cause affidavit, 30-year-old Anthony Ventura used sledge hammers to damage all sides of the granite monument.
When Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officers arrived, “pieces of granite, up to several inches in diameter, had been chipped from the monument and were laying in the grass. Bronze plaques on the sides of the monument which bear the names of fallen soldiers had also been vandalized.”
Call 6 Investigates found the damage totaled $37,000.
The memorial commemorates the burial of 1,616 confederate soldiers who died at Camp Morton while prisoners of war.
Following the incident, a gate was placed around the monument and police have been seen keeping an eye on it.
Last week, the Director of Indy Parks Linda Broadfoot said the location of Indy's monument at Garfield Park may not be "appropriate for its original purpose."
