KOKOMO, Ind. – Shortly after their loved one died due to drug overdose, the Davenport family knew they had to take action.
Monica Davenport of Kokomo died of fentanyl overdose in December 2016, and her family plans to hold a motorcycle fundraiser in her honor and for those who lost their lives.
"It breaks my heart,” said Roger Davenport, Monica’s brother who has been clean for eight years. “I was able to change and she wasn't. Sometimes I wonder what I could have done differently to help. But the reality is if the addict doesn't want help you can't help them.”
The motorcycle ride scheduled for Saturday will begin in Hagerstown and end in Kokomo. Money raised will benefit the Gilead House, which provides transitional housing for drug addicts just released from jail.
Reba Harris, who operates Gilead House, said she sees many people who struggle to kick their drug habits.
"A young lady today was crying and said I just can't kick this habit. I'm afraid when I leave here Miss Harris, I'm going to die. I'm afraid I'm going to die,” said Harris.
Amy Davenport, the wife of Roger and sister-in-law to Monica has been clean for four years. She is also a big supporter of the fundraiser.
"I just feel like people need to stop turning a blind eye to this and start loving and caring for their neighbors,” said Amy. “Putting them down, and acting like they are not there is not getting us anywhere.”
