INDIANAPOLIS – A man who was shot and killed early Friday morning in a home break-in thought he was kicking in the door of his children’s mother, police now say.

IMPD officers were called to the Cottages of Fall Creek in the 5700 block of Wiebeck Court after 1 a.m. Friday on a report of a person shot.

They arrived to find a 34-year-old male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds lying on the floor just inside a bedroom. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they believe the man kicked his way into the apartment because he believed it to be the residence of his children’s mother, who has a protective order against him.

According to witnesses, the man knocked on the door of the apartment and demanded entry. When he was told he had the wrong address, he forced his way inside.

The apartment was occupied by a man and woman and their two young children, ages 2 and 4. The male resident, who has not been identified, told police that when the intruder charged at him, he opened fire.

This marks the 11th fatal self-defense shooting in 2017.

Police said the male resident called 911 after the shooting and provided police with his gun. Officers said they could see significant damage to the front door and door frame, as if the door had been “violently kicked in.”

According to police, detectives subsequently found a protective order in place protecting a woman from the intruder. The order’s address was for a different apartment building within the same complex.

Police also found two separate police runs on Sept. 2 alleging the intruder was at the protected woman’s apartment.
