INDIANAPOLIS -- A 14-year-old student at Pike High School was discovered with an unloaded gun in his backpack Thursday afternoon, according to a spokeswoman for the school district.

Officers from the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township Police Department were alerted around 12:30 p.m. Thursday about a student who reportedly had a gun.

According to Sarah Dorsey, communications director for MSD of Pike Township, officers immediately conducted an investigation and found an unloaded gun in the 14-year-old student’s backpack.

Dorsey said the gun was confiscated and the student was taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Juvenile Intake Center.

“Our safety protocol was followed, the gun was confiscated, and the appropriate authorities were immediately contacted,” Dorsey said in a statement Thursday. “At no time was any Pike Township student or staff member in danger.”
