INDIANAPOLIS – Due to the increase in online and mobile app shopping, specific areas on city’s east side have been designated as Safe Exchange Zones, a place where items can safely be traded in person.

Developed by Cumberland Police Department officials, the zones are parking spaces in well-lit areas that provide places to exchange property from sites such as Craigslist and apps.

The spaces are in the northeast section of the parking lot at Town Hall, 11501 E. Washington Street in Cumberland.

Cumberland police also encourage families to use the zone for child custody arrangements.

Michael Crooke, Cumberland chief of police, recommends safety tips for those unable to use the Exchange Zone:

  • Use a well-lit, public parking lot with video surveillance
  • Bring a family or friend with you
  • Let others know where you are meeting and what time
  • Avoid meeting at your home
  • Avoid nighttime transactions
