Deadline near for comments on education changes

INDIANAPOLIS - The deadline for comments on proposed changes to Indiana's education standards is almost here.

Residents have until 11 p.m. Wednesday to submit comments to the Department of Education.

Lawmakers passed a bill last year requiring the state to draft new guidelines amid growing criticism of Indiana's use of national education standards called the Common Core.

Legislators are negotiating a bill that would set a July 1 deadline to ban the national standards from Indiana.

Department of Education spokesman David Galvin says more than 1,100 comments already have been submitted.

He says Gov. Mike Pence and the Center for Education and Career Innovation requested the Board of Education delay a vote on the bill in order to consider the large volume of comments.

The vote originally was set for April 9.
