INDIANAPOLIS - It was an emotional night for the Decatur Township community as school officials and fans took time to remember fallen IMPD Officer Rod Bradway before Friday’s football game.
Bradway’s two children attend Decatur Township schools and he was well-known around the community.
He officiated soccer games and was active in his kids’ extracurricular activities. The athletic director said he was a Hawk through and through.
It didn't matter which side of the football field fans were cheering for Friday, they came together as one to honor the fallen hero.
"He deserves it. He was a hero and he deserves to be honored," Plainfield fan Judy Holzknecht said.
"It's just truly amazing, all the people that came out. I noticed the Plainfield side has quite a bit of people over there as well," Marion County Sheriff Deputy Dan Johnston said.
Bradway and his family were also honored with a moment of silence.
"I know the family is suffering right now. They are going to be suffering for a long time there is no doubt, but fortunately, with the kids being involved here and everything, they'll stay involved, they’ll keep involved and they'll realize there is going to be a tomorrow and they can go on," Officer Tom Kinman, with the Plainfield police, said.
Hoping to help with that tomorrow, the school collected donations for the family at the gate and in the stands.
"Anytime I can help a fellow brother, family member, whatever, anything for a fallen officer, I think that is the right thing to do," Decatur Central fan Darrell Smith said.
During the game, players wore stickers with the initials RB on their helmets.
At halftime, as the Bradway family watched on, the band dedicated their performance to the officer and his two kids, who are both band members themselves.
Friday's donation efforts raised $1,400 for the Officer Bradway Family Fund.
