MUNCIE, Ind. -- A jail officer for Delaware County was recorded on video holding a man at gunpoint in a Muncie parking lot Tuesday morning.
The video, posted on Twitter by @bbyygrill, shows a man holding another man on the ground and pointing a gun at him around 9:30 a.m. in front of a nail salon in the 600 block of S. Tillotson Ave.
In the video, the man with the gun says, "You picked the wrong ----ing house to try to get into."
The man with the gun was later identified by police as jailer Jerry Shaner.
Shaner also yells at somebody else to call 911.
As a Muncie police officer shows up, Shaner can be heard yelling, "You move, you die." and "He tried to get into my house and my daughter saw him."
The Muncie officer talks to the man on the ground as the video ends.
Muncie Police Chief Joe Winkle said the man was accused of checking to see if car doors were unlocked. He also may have been on Shaner’s porch looking through a window.
There was no evidence the man, who may suffer from mental illness, had committed a crime, Winkle said.
"To detain someone you have the right to do that if you think a crime has been committed. I think that is what he was trying to do," said Winkle. "Once we got there and realized who we were dealing with. We've had calls on this subject before he's got some mental health issues. My officers recognized him and had dealt with him. Once we realized no crime had been committed we released him to his family."
Winkle said he didn't believe any charges would be filed against the man.
Shaner has been placed on administrative leave, pending an internal investigation.
