Police: 76-year-old woman beaten unconscious trying to help granddaughter

MUNCIE, Ind. -- A 76-year-old woman was beaten unconscious when she tried to intervene in a domestic situation involving her granddaughter. 

It happened at a home in the 2700 block of S. Hackley Street early Friday morning. 

Witnesses told police that Randall Lennis, 40, was beating the mother of his child when that woman's 76-year-old grandmother tried to intervene. Lennis then struck the older woman multiple times with a lamp, knocking her unconscious. 

The elderly woman was taken to Ball Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The granddaughter's condition is unknown at this time. 

Lennis was arrested at the scene. He's charged with burglary, battery causing serious bodily injury, battery causing moderate bodily injury, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, intimidation and domestic battery.
