WHITESTOWN, Ind. -- A dog is safe after being left in a dumpster in Whitestown to die.

Authorities say it happened sometime Thursday afternoon.

A neighbor who lives in the Clark Meadows subdivision heard the dog barking from inside a construction site dumpster and called police.

He's scared but OK and is now at the Humane Society for Boone County. They're calling him Ray.

Anyone with information about Ray or who put him in the dumpster is asked to call Whitestown Police at (317) 769-2677.

Ray is a beagle mix, and officials think he might belong to someone around here. They hope our story will help our owners recognize him.

Humane Society workers are shocked at how he was discovered. Right now, they're not 100-percent sure someone did this on purpose, because it's possible the dog crawled in on his own, looking for food.

"If he were dumped, it's a lazy way of solving your problem," Humane Society of Boone County volunteer Michelle Atkinson said. "You can contact someone for help. You can contact a shelter. Your local police. Whatever. And someone will help you."
