INDIANAPOLIS -- Dog owners in downtown Indianapolis want a place nearby where their pets can play safely without a leash.
The newly-formed Downtown Indy Dog Park Coalition is urging the city to open a dog park downtown.
"A lot of great green space to walk the dog, but to get the dog exercise, to have him play with his friends, be social, and for humans to kind of socially interact with other like-minded people, dog owners. We don't really have a place to go in the downtown area," said Brian Willsey, Downtown Indy Dog Park Coalition.
Indy Parks currently operates four public bark parks, including Broad Ripple and Eagle Creek.
The City-County Councilor Zach Adamson will host a meeting next Tuesday, May 9, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at Brookside Park in Indianapolis. The Downtown Indy Dog Park Coalition will be there and is asking dog lovers and supporters to attend.
A spokeswoman with Indy Parks says they will discuss the possibility of creating a dog park at Spades Park on the city's east side.
She says they know there is a demand, but it's a matter of finding the right land and raising funds.
