Dominique Clanton, 18, charged with murder, robbery in iPhone Craigslist killing

Nishant Patel, 31, killed Dec. 17

INDIANAPOLIS - Two men are accused of luring a man to an east side apartment complex and killing him over an iPhone the victim was selling on Craigslist.

Bryant "BeDo" Dowdy, the suspected gunman, has been arrested in Ohio on preliminary charges of murder and robbery, while Dominique Clanton, 18, has been formally charged in Marion County, both in the Dec. 17 shooting death of Nishant Patel, 31.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Patel bought an iPhone 5, but then decided he didn't like it, so he put it up for sale on Craigslist for $750.

When a potential buyer contacted Patel, his family urged him to meet in a public place, but he decided to go to the man's apartment complex at 670 English Village Lane instead, according to the affidavit.

Patel called his brother shortly before he was set to meet the buyer, telling him he was going to keep his brother on his line during the exchange in case anything went wrong.

Patel's brother told police he heard another man say to his brother, "I thought you said $700?" and his brother responded, "No, $750." The other man then asked, "It's AT&T?" and Patel responded, "No, Sprint," according to the affidavit.

When the conversation went dead, Patel's brother and dad drove to the apartment complex and found Patel slumped over in his car, suffering from a gunshot wound to the face, according to the affidavit.

Kenneth Briggs, a resident at the apartment complex, said he heard the shots.

"I walked up and saw a guy laying in the car dead. He had a hole in his face," Briggs said. "I didn't know what to think. It's all over an iPhone?"

Patel was pronounced dead at the scene. The iPhone 5 and the gun he was carrying, for which he had a license, were missing, police said.

Homicide investigators began tracking the cell phone, but their real break came when Patel's gun was used to shoot two people the next day, including Clanton.

Clanton survived the shooting, while the other victim, who was also believed to be involved in Patel's shooting, died, police said.

The stolen phone, along with several others, was found in Clanton's vehicle at the shooting scene, police said.
