INDIANAPOLIS - A chase wound through Indianapolis on Wednesday morning after a task force found a man they had been looking for in association with burglaries and auto thefts.
Indianapolis police said Jamey Keener, 27, was taken into custody after a tire blew on the stolen pickup truck he was driving near 56th Street and Capitol Avenue.
The chase began after the task force, composed of Indiana State Police, Marion County Sheriff's Office and U.S. marshals, received information that Keener was at the Dollar Inn at 75h Street and Shadeland Avenue.
Investigators said Keener arrived at the motel he sped away from officers, almost hitting several of them as he fled.
A chase ensued for about 30 minutes, mostly on Interstate 465, police said.
Keener then got off the interstate and onto Mann Road, leading officers through downtown, police said. At one point, Keener drove the wrong direction on Capitol Avenue.
Police were not able to put down stop sticks because they were not able to get ahead of Keener, investigators said.
Nearby residents said that the truck hit a curb, causing the blown tire shortly before the chase ended.
Keener ran from the truck, but residents were able to point police to him.
"There were a couple of us," Witness Stacey Boggs said. "We pointed and saw where he got out of his car and where he started running, so we pointed police that way to him. At that point I went inside and peeked out (of) my back door and could tell they had him somewhere and (had) apprehended him."
Police said Keener had been considered armed and dangerous and he has a history of resisting law enforcement.
He was arrested and taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital. Several other people who were in the motel room were held for questioning. There could be additional arrests.
"This was a guy who needed to be stopped," Indiana State Police Captain Bob Burke said.
The truck had been taken from Johnson County. There were no additional injuries.
