INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis police made dozens of arrests during a 24-hour sweep of an east-side neighborhood that has been plagued with violent crime.
In a news conference Tuesday, police said they made 50 to 60 arrests during "Operation C.L.E.A.N. Sweep," which was launched Monday in the 30th Street corridor.
Police said the offenses ranged from parole and traffic violations to possession of handguns and narcotics.
Preliminary numbers posted on the IMPD Facebook page said 57 arrests were made and four handguns were seized.
IMPD also said two businesses were closed by the health department.
Four previous sweeps resulted in 144 arrests since last September, police said.
The sweep involved several agencies, including:
-- Indianapolis Metro Police
-- Marion County Sheriff's Department
-- Marion County Prosecutor's Office
-- Marion County Community Corrections
-- Indiana Department of Corrections
-- Indiana Excise Police
-- the USDA
-- Department of Metropolitan Development
-- FBI Safe Streets Taskforce
-- Marion County Health Department
"This is a system-wide approach. This is a cooperative approach among not only criminal justice agencies but all government agencies to address crime," Officer Greg Brinker said. "I think of it this way: we're out there, we're looking. It's our job to enforce the law and that's what we're here for."
C.L.E.A.N. Sweep stands for Coordinated Law Enforcement Activity Network Sweep.
