INDIANAPOLIS -- After over five decades on the air, Dr. Dirt - Dick Crum - is officially retiring from television.

Crum first hit the airwaves in 1962.

"There was a directive from the director of extensions saying that TV had arrived," said Crum. "But he didn't think it was anything we should get involved in. So, since I was the new person on the staff, they said: 'how would you like to do TV?' I said: 'Well, I guess I can.'"

And the rest is history.

For over 50 years, Dr. Dirt has answered thousands of viewer questions - but he says it's time to hang up his hat.

As for the future? Dick says he plans to do some gardening and travel with his beautiful bride of over 57 years.

But he's not completely gone - Dr. Dirt will continue to answer your gardening questions at DrDirt@theindychannel.com.
