INDIANAPOLIS -- This weekend is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, and police are trying to reduce the number of alcohol-related crashes with DUI checkpoints across Marion County.

The DUI: Taskforce Indiana project comes from a grant from the Governor's Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving. It's a statewide project.

Police say the checkpoints will be moving across the county all weekend.

The National Safety Council, a congressionally chartered nonprofit, said motor vehicle deaths were 9 percent higher through the first six months of 2016 than in 2015, according to ABC News.

The DUI checkpoints are being conducted by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Indiana State Police and the Speedway, Cumberland, Lawrence, and Beech Grove police departments.

The DUI checkpoints will take place:

  • Friday beginning at 10 p.m.
  • Saturday beginning at 10 p.m.
  • Sunday beginning at 7 p.m.
