COLUMBUS, Ind. -- A man died Monday evening after swimming across a river to get away from police.

Indiana State Police officers say the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department responded to a suspicious vehicle call on the 5100 block of N. County Road 250 West. Police saw a white Dodge van in the area.

The van suddenly stopped when police were following it. A backseat passenger got out and ran from police.

He entered the Driftwood River and swam across it. He collapsed when he made it across. A deputy made it across the river and called for medical help.

The man, later identified as Robert Quick, 44, was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital where attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Quick was wanted out of Johnson and Bartholomew counties for multiple warrants.
