AVON, Ind. - An Avon family felt a special connection to Monday's episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Just like the family featured on the episode, the Alexander family traveled half-way around the world to adopt children from Ethiopia, and they want to bring awareness to the need to support orphans.
"Adoption has completely changed us as a family," said Tisha Alexander.
Tisha and her husband Monte have three biological sons and two girls they adopted from Ethiopia -- twin 5-year-olds Hanna and Chloe, who seem to love their new surroundings.
"I love that we have an upstairs and a downstairs," one girl said.
"I'm happy we live here because there's not a lot of bad things," her sister added.
A lot of good things have come from adopting internationally, but it also has its challenges.
"It can be a very long process, and there's a lot of paperwork, but the joy of bringing them home is something that's truly amazing," Tisha Alexander said.
The Alexanders adopted the twins three years ago from an orphan care home through the organization "All God's Children International."
The family featured on Monday's episode of Extreme Makover: Home Edition also adopted children from Ethiopia using the same organization.
Though the two families have never met, the Alexanders say they share a very special bond.
"It's like a big family," Tisha Alexander said. "They've been through the process, they understand exactly what you're going through and a lot of times that exact situation they have been through it too, and they can help you and pray for you."
With international adoptions in the national TV spotlight, the Alexanders hope it spreads awareness about the need to support orphans.
"There are millions of children that need parents," Tisha Alexander said. "Adoption's not for everyone, but it's for a lot more people than who are doing it."
Monte and Tisha recently adopted three more children who are still in Ethiopia.
They're waiting for paperwork to go through to bring them home to Indiana.
