PERU, Ind. - A fatal crash Thursday morning left one man dead and closed southbound U.S. 31 for hours.

The crash, near State Road 218 in Miami County, involved two tractor-trailers and two cars, police said.

Michael Natterstad, 53, of Brownsburg, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Investigators said Natterstad was driving a semi-tractor that was pulling a box trailer southbound when he rear-ended a box truck that was slowing down for a red light.

The box truck, driven by James Williams, 44, of Kokomo, then rear-ended a Honda CRV and a Jeep Liberty that were stopped at the light, police said.

The driver of the Jeep -- Ellen Badillo, 38, of Elkhart -- and a passenger in the Honda -- Caron Boggs, 34, of Peru -- were taken to Dukes Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Neither Williams nor the driver of the Honda sustained any injuries.

The southbound lanes were closed and northbound traffic was restricted to one lane while police cleaned up the crash site.

All lanes were reopened shortly after 4 p.m.
