FISHERS, Ind. -- Nearly a year after the store was announced, ground was finally broken for the IKEA opening in Fishers next year.

The groundbreaking happened Tuesday morning.

For so long, shoppers have had to go to Chicago or Cincinnati to browse an IKEA, but central Indiana is on its way to seeing the store just a short drive away.

The Swedish furniture store is planning a $40 million store built on 35 acres on the eastern side of I-69, just south of the 116th Street exit.

The building will be 296,000 square feet, with 1,000 parking spaces. IKEA representatives have previously said it will add 250 jobs to the area.

There will also be more than 50 food service opportunities in IKEA's restaurant, Swedish food market, cafe and coworker cafeteria.

With IKEA and TopGolf coming to Fishers next year, the city has been named the 2016 Community of the Year by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.
