HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. -- A Sheridan Fire Department captain was arrested Friday for allegedly taking drug evidence from a crash involving a family member.

Travis William Stern, 37, was arrested Friday on charges of official misconduct and obstruction of justice.

According to a press release from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, on Jan. 31, deputies responded to a crash on SR 38 at Six Points Road near Sheridan on a single vehicle crash around 4:30 p.m. The driver of the vehicle, Joshua Stoops, 37, said he thought he fell asleep while driving.

During the crash investigation, an informant told deputies that Stern, who responded to the scene with the Sheridan Fire Department, allegedly removed drug evidence from the crashed vehicle. The drugs and paraphernalia were later destroyed, according to the press release.

According to officials, Stern is related to Stoops.

Stern is currently being held at the Hamilton County Jail with a bond set at $5,000.
