FISHERS, Ind. - A body found submerged in Geist Reservoir on Sunday belonged to a missing Fishers teen, the Hamilton County Coroner's Office confirmed.
The Fishers Police Dive Team recovered an SUV with a body in it from Geist Reservoir on Sunday afternoon.
Authorities were notified of tire tracks near the water from a resident and started searching the water around 4:30 p.m.
At 5:30 p.m., divers found the SUV that was later confirmed to belong to missing Fishers teen Peyton Riekhof, police said.
"It appears the vehicle traveled on Tamenden Trace and through a yard and then entered the water," Officer Tom Weger with the Fishers Police Department said. "As part of the investigation, we'll be determining exactly how that happened and why the vehicle ended up in the water."
Investigators said the teen drove into her subdivision and through a home lot under construction.
Officials said the submerged SUV was only 250 feet from Riekhof's home.
Riekhof was only weeks away from starting her freshman year at University of Kansas. Her family said they don't know what happened or why.
"Say prayers for mom and dad and her brothers and sisters and for everybody that misses her tremendously. Everybody's going to miss her big smile and hugs. A beautiful girl," Riekhof's grandfather said.
Just before 7 p.m. Sunday, the Fishers Police Department canceled the Silver Alert for Peyton Riekhof.
