MARION, Ind. - Southbound Interstate 69 has reopened 90 minutes after a fatal accident closed the highway in both directions Tuesday afternoon.
INDOT officials confirmed that southbound lanes of I-69 had closed near mile marker 264 due to a vehicle on fire around 2 p.m.
Police said Dixie Burgauer, 57, of Florida, was in a 2001 Chevrolet Impala following her husband, who was in another vehicle.
For an unknown reason, the woman's car left the road, hit a tree and caught on fire, officials said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers believe Burgauer may have died prior to the car catching fire. Police said they suspect she suffered a medical episode.
Northbound lanes were initially closed, but had since reopened.
Traffic was re-routed off the interstate at State Road 218. The result was heavy back-ups on I-69 in Grant and Huntington Counties.
