INDIANAPOLIS - A former Greenwood High School teacher pleaded not guilty to seven counts of child seduction in his first court appearance Wednesday morning.
Police said Timothy Guilfoy, 36, was found naked in his SUV with a 17-year-old female student Saturday night. When officers approached the vehicle and asked what they were doing, Guilfoy told officers they were having sex.
According to court documents, Guilfoy had sex with the student at least twice and they had exchanged sexually explicit messages.
The arresting officers asked Guilfoy if he knew what he did was illegal and he said yes. When he was asked why he did it, he said, "I don't know, attention. I guess, pathetic."
"It's upsetting when a person in a position of trust takes advantage of that position for his own benefit for sexual benefit. The black eye it gives to all the great teachers out there who go to work every day with the intent of taking care of their students rather than the alternative," Deputy Prosecutor Eric Schmadeke said.
Guilfoy resigned from his teaching position he held for 14 years after his arrest.
Prevent Child Abuse Indiana believes there have been enough of these cases that students and teachers should sign covenants to remind them of the boundaries.
"We need to underscore it, maybe at the beginning of every school year. This is a covenant between adults and children in the school setting. This is a cone zone. This is a line in the sand. This is a boundary that can never, should never and must never be crossed," PCAI President Sharon Pierce said.
The judge ordered Guilfoy to not have contact with the victim. His next hearing is set for April 10.
