INDIANAPOLIS - Former Indianapolis Mayor Steve Goldsmith has filed for divorce from his wife of 24 years, Margaret Goldsmith, a spokeswoman confirmed.
The paperwork was filed Wednesday in Marion County Superior Court.
"As you can imagine, this is a difficult time for the entire Goldsmith family. Your support and respect for the family's privacy are much appreciated," said spokeswoman Kate Snedeker.
Goldsmith, 66, served as Indianapolis mayor from 1992 to 2000.
In 2010, he was appointed Deputy Mayor of Operations for New York City, but he resigned from that post in 2011 after he was arrested following a violent altercation with his wife in the District of Columbia.
According to the police report, Margaret Goldsmith told officers her husband had smashed a phone and grabbed her as she tried to call police.
Steve Goldsmith was later cleared in the case.
