FORT WAYNE, Ind. - A man who pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for beating his girlfriend to death with a baseball bat has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Anthony Ochs, 40, of Fort Wayne apologized to Susan Lombardi's family before an Allen County judge sentenced him Friday for killing the 42-year-old Fort Wayne woman.
Ochs pleaded guilty last month to one count of voluntary manslaughter for clubbing Lombardi over the head with a baseball bat, leaving her with traumatic brain injuries.
Lombardi died eight days after the April 2012 attack. Her father and brother spoke briefly in court before her stepmother, Deborah Caudill, detailed Lombardi's gruesome head injuries.
The News-Sentinel reported Caudill testified she thinks Lombardi was trying to "escape" Ochs, who would not let her go.
