FORT WAYNE, Ind. - A man who pleaded guilty to animal cruelty after dropping a kitten into a fire has received a one-year prison sentence.
Matthew Jerome, 22, of Fort Wayne was sentenced Monday. He had pleaded guilty in December to two felonies of torturing or mutilating a vertebrate animal and a misdemeanor charge of cruelty to an animal.
The Journal Gazette reports his sentence also bars Jerome from possessing any pets while he's serving one year of probation. He must also undergo a psychological evaluation and complete community service.
Jerome was charged last August after police said he dropped his girlfriend's kitten into a fire. The animal, named Sparkle, suffered burned paws and had its whiskers scorched off.
