FORTVILLE, Ind. -- A Fortville Elementary School instructional assistant was arrested Tuesday for public intoxication at work.

Police were called to the school around 11 am after a teacher and a teacher's assistant told the principal that Angela Gendron smelled like alcohol.

Officers say they found empty beer cans inside the school and also in Gendron's vehicle.

She reportedly registered .24 on a portable breath test.

Gendron, 45, was taken to the Hancock County Jail.

Dr. Shane Robbins, Superintendent of the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation, says Gendron was suspended pending investigation and further action.

In a statement, Robbins went on to say:

This is an unfortunate situation, but our staff acted quickly and there was little to no disruption to the school day. As I have stated before, the safety and well-being of our students and staff is the number one priority of the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation. We will remain diligent in ensuring nothing minimizes that priority.
