BROOKVILLE, Ind. – A southeastern Indiana school district is considering random drug testing for students participating in extra-curricular activities, as well as students that drive to school.

Franklin County Community Schools will vote on a random student drug testing policy at a board meeting on April 10.

The district is currently the only school corporation in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference (EIAC) that does not have a drug testing policy.

If approved, students in grades 7-12 involved in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, as well as students who drive to school, could be subject to random drug testing.

Superintendent Dr. Debbie Howell declined to provide a copy of the proposal to RTV6 before it is approved.

“I can tell you that it closely mirrors many other policies across the state,” said Howell.

Zionsville Community Schools approved random drug testing last fall despite concerns from parents.
