CARMEL, Ind. -
Police are urging drivers to stay away from the area near Crooked Stick Golf Club if they don't need to be there.
Getting around in the area hasn't been easy for anyone this week, due to the big crowds drawn by the BMW Championship.
"The hotel we stayed at is five minutes away. Took us two hours to get here. Five miles, two hours," one golf fan told RTV6's Drew Smith.
"I left my office, which is at 96th and Meridian, at 11, got here at two o'clock," another said.
Authorities are quick to point out that they're doing the best they can and people need to plan accordingly.
"What we're trying to tell people is you want to be patient, listen to the officers, we're trying to get people through as quickly as possible, again, if you can avoid the area, if you don't need to come to this area, stay away from it," said Lieut. Jeff Horner with Carmel police.
The biggest traffic jams are in areas between Michigan Road and Interstate 465 and then north to 116th Street.
Some people didn't seem to have an issue today with traffic and shared their secrets to avoiding a huge delay.
"Come in from the north, north of 136th Street and come back south," one said.
"I came up Spring Mill, which runs along Meridian, and you come back that way you stay off that Meridian mess," another golf fan said.
Police said Towne Road will be blocked off 30 minutes before the gates open and 30 minutes after the gates are closed.
