INDIANAPOLIS -- Gov. Mike Pence was back at the Statehouse Friday to make what will likely be one of his final major public appearances as governor.

The Vice President-elect spoke to more than 400 4th graders for "Statehood Day," the celebration of the day that Indiana... became a state.

This Statehood Day was even more special because Indiana's bicentennial has been celebrated all year long.

"And we will, in whatever time that we're given left do our best to continue to see Indiana as a crossroad. As the heart of the heartland, as that crossroads of America. But make no mistake about it, the next celebration belongs to you. And my word to you as your governor, is whatever dream is in your heart, reach for it. That's what Hoosiers have always done," said Pence.

The celebration also included a student reading her essay from the Annual Statehouse Day contest.

This year's winner was Jillian Stemler of New Albany.

Statehood Day is officially this Sunday, December 11.
