MADISON COUNTY, Ind. - A Grant County Sheriff’s deputy was killed in a motorcycle crash in neighboring Madison County on Friday, officials said.
The crash happened north of Elwood on State Road 13 at County Road 1400 North just after 3:30 p.m.
The off-duty officer and his passenger were traveling south on SR 13 when a northbound pickup truck turned in front of them as the truck tried to turn left onto CR 1400N, Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson said.
The officer was later identified as 49-year-old Michael Andry of Converse, Ind.
The motorcycle struck the truck on the passenger side door, officials said.
Andry, his passenger and the driver of the truck were all taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood.
The officer was pronounced dead at the hospital by the Madison County Coroner.
Richardson said the motorcycle passenger, identified as 48-year-old Amy Weagley, was then airlifted to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
Carey Webber, the 26-year-old driver of the truck, was treated and released.
Richardson said he knew Andry personally from their days working together in Grant County.
"Being in the law enforcement community, it's your family. You spend a lot of time together, even with those in adjoining counties. Knowing the sheriff and knowing the officer today, (it's) very tough for us. And watching them go through all this pain, we're praying for them and we're there to support them and trying to help pick 'em up and that's what we do," Richardson said.
The crash remained under investigation. Authorities took a blood sample from Webber as part of standard procedure.
