GREENFIELD, Ind. -- The Greenfield Central School District is debating whether to accept a $50,000 donation to help replace the turf on their high school football field because the donors want the school to include a logo that says #BLESSTHEWORLD.
Park Chapel Christian Church Spiritual Development Minister Danny Curry is the spokesperson for the five donors, who wish to remain anonymous. The donors sent an email to the board saying they would donate the money in exchange for placing the words on the field where the corporate sponsorship logo would usually go.
Curry said the logo is not a set of beliefs or a creed, but a call to action.
The school district has been raising funds to replace the natural turf on their football field with synthetic turf, but the project will cost the district around $800,000.
The district is covering $200,000 of that, but they are counting on donations to help cover the remaining $600,000. That $50,000 would be a huge help, but board member Steve Menser said they are worried about possible lawsuits and backlash from the community.
“It’s tied to Christianity. It’s tied to God’s blessing. There is no other meaning,” said Menser. “It is a religious word since it’s tied to Christianity and that may offend people of other religions.”
The district has not made a decision on the donation and will discuss the issue at the next school board meeting in April.
