GREENWOOD< Ind. - The Greenwood Park Mall was transformed Sunday night into an anti-terrorist training ground.
Organized by the FBI, Sunday's exercise was a "capstone" session, meaning it was larger and more complex than other training scenarios.
"If we focus a very large-scale exercise like this, imagine what we can do on a smaller scale," said Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter.
Agencies across the U.S. are carrying out similar terrorist attack exercises to prepare for situations like an active shooter in a crowded mall.
"It's a huge issue, and it's one of the reasons why we have a venue like this," said Jay Abbott, a spokesman for the FBI. "It's an opportunity for all of us to share our resources in the event something bad where to happen to a lot of good people."
The FBI partnered with state agencies and local police, fire and EMS for the "Complex Mall Attack" scenario.
"I think after 9/11 and Katrina, we've learned communication is important in deploying resources and avoiding duplication of effort," said IMPD Chief Rick Hite.
Officials said if a complex terrorist attack were to happen, the skills gained at the training event could save lives.
