GREENWOOD, Ind. -- The Greenwood Economic Development Commission approved a resolution to make land earmarked for a multi-million dollar iceplex eligible for tax breaks.

Some people who aren't happy about the location of the facility voiced their displeasure at the commission meeting Monday night.

The 115,000-square-foot iceplex is planned for the Freedom Park off Stop 18 Road.

The facility is expected to be the home for youth hockey and other ice sports as it will feature two ice rinks, two turf fields (convertible into two additional ice rinks), a fitness center, retail space, locker rooms and a food service space.

A water park and a middle school are also planned for the area.

"We had problems, but this is gonna be a disaster," said Sharon Hayes, who believes the iceplex will create traffic issues in the area.

That sentiment was repeated time and time again at Greenwood's Economic Development Commission meeting.

"Money is not everything," Hayes said. "You want your neighborhood to be a neighborhood."

The facility will also open for public ice skating.

Christina Goll said her neighborhood is not ideal for the project.

"The location that they are proposing has been a nightmare for the last probably ten years," Goll said.

She and her neighbors want traffic issues resolved fixed.

Krista Taggart serves as corporation council for the City of Greenwood.

"We anticipate that there will be some road improvements that go in contemporaneously with the middle school, but we think that the traffic patterns there should be complimentary," she said.

Taggart says months of planning have gone into bringing the iceplex to Greenwood and there are at least four more months left before the proposal is heard by Greenwood City Council and voted on.

Neighbors say they'll be there every step of the way.

The next meeting is scheduled for March 20 at 7 p.m. at Greenwood City Hall.
