FISHERS, Ind. --  With new developments in Fishers, like the opening of Portillo’s, Top Golf and IKEA, the city is seeing an increase in the amount of traffic.

This can lead to frustration for drivers, so the city is adjusting accordingly.

“We knew the area was ripe for commercial development, even years ago, before IKEA or Top Golf or any of these certain businesses were coming. We knew there was interest in the I-69 commercial corridor, certainly a popular area,” says Jeff Hill, Director of Engineering for the City of Fishers. “The mayor and city council provided us with a mechanism of funding and we were able to move forward with the infrastructure improvements.”

The city is adding additional traffic signals and extra turn lanes to 116th St.

INDOT also plans to add more lanes to I-69, just north of the 116th St. exit.

On IKEA’s opening day, scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 11, the plan is to have IKEA traffic consultants and the department of public safety monitoring traffic flow. They’ll adjust signal times to make sure as many drivers can get through the lights as possible and have extra police officers on hand as well to help with directing traffic.

Going into IKEA, they will route drivers in to I-69 at 116th St., and leaving IKEA drivers will turn right onto 116th St. and utilize the new interchange there.

But the director of engineering says he wants to stress patience in navigating through heavy traffic on Wednesday.
