FISHERS, Ind. -- The future of the Fishers Freedom Festival is in jeopardy.

The popular festival is in its 29th year but could be scrapped if not enough funds are not raised over the next month.

The Fishers City Council recently recommended not to include the festival as part of a group of 13 non-profits to receive city funding.

In addition, Freedom Festival Board President Don Dragoo says for the first time the city will be charging the festival for city services.

“The festival costs quite a bit of money even when the city is contributing” Dragoo said. The 2017 Freedom Festival had a budget of $390,000.

Dragoo says he’s expecting a quote in the next few days from the city for how much those services will cost.

A key factor in the fate of the festival is how much money can be raised during two upcoming fundraisers. The first, Fishers Oktoberfest, takes place this weekend at Witten Park near 131st and Olio Road. The second, Christmas in October Craft Fair, is scheduled for October 14.
