HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. – Parents within the Hamilton Southeastern School District spoke out Wednesday night, and officials listened in a meeting concerning a potential change to the academic calendar.

In a 6-1 vote, the Hamilton Southeastern Board of Trustees reversed a recent decision to switch back to a balanced school calendar, which would have moved the fall start date up to extend Thanksgiving break.

"The school system should not be open August 6th, this is ridiculous. You can start in the middle of August,” said one parent during the meeting.

Another parent said, “When we have a week off in October, a week off in November, two weeks in December, as working parents we're not afforded that."

The option approved was originally recommended by Supt. Allen Bourff, the HSE Education Association and received the highest number of votes on the community survey.

The calendar approved is similar to the current one, which includes one week fall break, three days at Thanksgiving and one week for spring break.

The calendar voted on by the board will stay in effect for the next two years.
