HAMILTON COWNTY, Ind. -- A calf in Hamilton County made a break for it last week, escaping with two other calves. Now her handlers are desperately trying to get her back.

The calf, named Daisy, is hard to miss. The 1-year-old Santa Gertrudis Heifer is red and weighs about 800 pounds.

"She can get really skittish sometimes," said Noah Sanchez. "But she's really tame."

Sanchez and his grandfather, Ken Fields, take care of a herd of about 25 calves.

They've never had one get out, until last Wednesday. Three calves rushed the fence near 256th Street on Cornell Road, hopped the electric line, and hoofed it free.

Neighbors helped Fields comb hundreds of miles, and found two of the calves, but Daisy is still missing.

"I don't want nobody to get hurt and I don't want her hurt," Fields said. "Cows are kind of like pets to me."

He alerted the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department -- as well as others neighbors -- asking them to keep an eye out for Daisy.

"She could be anywhere," Fields said. "She could have went two or three miles from here."

This time of year, state agencies are asking people to be alert and slow down for farm equipment on the roads, which could help find Daisy.

"I really hope to get her back," Fields said.

If you see Daisy, call Fields at 317-491-7662.
