WESTFIELD, Ind. – A Westfield gym that serves children with special needs plans to close for good this weekend.
Co-owner of Carter’s Play Place, Adam Meents, said the business lost a key investor, forcing the closure. The gym is named after his 9-year-old son who is autistic.
"I appreciate everybody's support. I'm just making a plea if there is any way possible, anybody has interest, we can make this work and we can get through this,” said Meents.
Parents said they were upset when they heard about the Sunday closure.
"She needs special swings and they have adaptive equipment here,” said Catherine Hollinden about her 9-year-old daughter who is autistic and non-verbal. “She feels comfortable to come here. It's been a great resource for us."
Although the gym serves special needs children, those not on the spectrum are also welcome. Parents who paid for a membership will be refunded, said Meents.
“We need an angel to come out there and help us by bringing in an occupational therapist side for the business. We wanted that from the beginning but it just never materialized,” said Meents.
