Hammond man working on Jean Shepherd documentary

HAMMOND, Ind. - A Hammond native is working on a full-length film documentary on the life of radio personality Jean Shepherd after producing a 10-minute documentary on him five years ago to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his best known work, "A Christmas Story."

Nick Mantis tells The Times of Munster the documentary will be narrated in Shepherd's  own voice. Mantis is culling audio for the voice-over from more than 800 hours of now public domain recordings of Shepherd's late-night show, which was hugely popular on the East Coast during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

Mantis hopes to complete the movie by next Christmas and find a studio that will distribute it. He has been interviewing northwest Indiana residents who knew or had encounters with Shepherd.
