HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. -- For those using the state's food assistance program in Hancock County, there will now be more access to healthy, fresh produce.

Barbara Smith is the first farmers market organizer to submit the application needed to accept the statewide food assistance program SNAP -- or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

"The Hancock County fairgrounds hosts the area's year-round farmer's market and those organizers are expecting to be busier this year as the news spreads," she said.

This means more fresh produce options for the area's low income families.

Smith says the response has been very positive among customers and she expects interest to grow as we get deeper into the growing season.

"I've got the agencies in Greenfield that like the WIC program," she said. "[Those who help people sign up] for SNAP are starting to educate people that it's available at the farmers markets."

The farmers market at the fairgrounds is open every Saturday from 8 a.m.-noon.
