FORTVILLE, Ind. -- The parent of a third grade student at McCordsville Elementary school is upset about what his daughter saw during a field trip to a local farm.
The students went to Piney Acres Farm in Fortville to see their Halloween display.
One of the decorations depicts a person hanging from a gallows with a noose around their neck, legs tied, arms tied, and a hood over their head.
Jermaine Kelley's wife was chaperoning their daughter's third grade field trip when she noticed the display.
Kelley says he found it highly inappropriate for 8-year-olds to see something like that.
"I would say you know, you just got to think of the kids. What you're exposing our children to. And do we really want to see someone hanging, with such vivid photos like that and imagery," said Kelley.
Kelley is asking the school district to make sure in the future that field trip locations are appropriate for kids.
Piney Acres Farm spokesperson, Jennifer Lear, released the following statement about the display:
"We are a local haunt attraction. Bottom line is that it is a Halloween prop. Halloween is a holiday that is based on the dead, including ghosts, spirits and grim reapers. It's a holiday that happens once a year. It is not our intention to offend anyone. Piney Acres Farm prides itself on inclusive family entertainment throughout the year, including holiday activities on our Christmas tree farm, our annual egg hunt, summer nights on the farm and our fall activities."
There have been several reports from around the country this Halloween featuring decorations that resemble the lynchings of the Jim Crow era, according to the NAACP.
