One dead in morning fire on Harding Street

3 firefighters suffered minor injuries

INDIANAPOLIS - A man was killed Friday morning in a fire on the west side of downtown.

Firefighters with the Indianapolis Fire Department responded to a fire at a variety store near Hardin and Pruitt streets on the west side just after 6 a.m.

Upon arrival, crews found flames and smoke were too intense to enter.

After the fire was subdued, IFD crews entered the business to find the body of an unidentified male victim believed to be in his 50s.

Three firefighters received minor injuries while battling the flames.

Nearby residents said the variety store was a neighborhood staple in the close-knit community.

"Everybody has known each other for over 20-something years because I've been in the neighborhood for 25," neighbor Tina Marbley said.

Neighbors said they believed they knew who the victim was. They said he is the heart of the west-side neighborhood.

An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.
