Zoo's adorable baby orangutan has been named

INDIANAPOLIS -- Tuesday is a big day for elections in Indiana. Not only is it the day of the Indiana primary, but the state also found out what the new orangutan at the zoo will be named.

The zoo invited people to name the the female 1-month-old Sumatran orangutan. The name has been decided, and the orangutan will be named Mila (MEE-lah). The name is Indonesian, meaning "dear one."

The five available choices were:

  • Kiki (KEE-kee), the name of Sirih’s great-grandmother;
  • Kitri (KEE-tree), meaning “rare” in Indonesian;
  • Mila (MEE-lah), an Indonesian word meaning “dear one”;
  • Narah (NAH-rah), meaning “truth” in Indonesian;
  • Ndari (in-DAH-ree), an Indonesian word meaning “full moon”, which also coincides with the day the baby was born.

Voting began April 21 and ran through noon on May 2.

Anybody who voted will be entered to win an Indianapolis Zoo prize pack.

The orangutan was born on March 23 to 23-year-old Sirih. The zoo says Sirih is a caring and attentive mother and keeps her new daughter close.
