HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. – Several vehicle accidents and traffic jams have caused crews in Hendricks County to reconfigure what neighbors call a dangerous road.
The “S-curved” street along the Hendricks and Marion County line at Raceway Road will be adjusted to making conditions safer for neighbors and drivers. The current configuration has sharp left and right turns closely together.
"There’s a fairly high traffic count on this road, about 4,300 cars a day -- the smoother you can make the turns that motorists have to make, the less chance there is for accidents,” said County Engineer John Ayers.
He said his team is trying to fix the road before more crashes happen.
In Wayne Township, an accident on an S-curved road sent a mother and her 8-year-old child to the hospital after they hit another vehicle head-on. Another similar accident happened in Greenfield that killed two people.
Ayers said distracted driving and speed can make the curves even more dangerous.
"You have to make sure you give them (drivers) adequate warning of turns they have to make and sometimes they don’t pay attention and we have to account for that,” he said.
The project began in July and is scheduled to be complete by October.
